How to Debrief What Worked in Your Business and Reuse It

August 20, 20266 min read

I can't believe it's finally working. What do I do now? A business debrief helps you understand why a result worked before you rush to reproduce it, which is why we begin with the clues instead of the conclusion.

A Luminary in my world shared a beautiful business win with me the other day, and I beamed with love. I could also see the awe and confusion creating a knot underneath her joy.

She had been part of a collaborative event, and this time more people joined her email list than after anything similar she had done before. Several of them even wrote to tell her that what she shared had supported them.

Yes!!!!

She told me she had never felt so aligned. She was finally communicating the work she knows so well without performing, and she had built something that brought her intellect and her intuition into the same experience. My client radiated her medicine, led by it, taught through it, and gave everyone a taste of what was possible when held by her. This is glorious!

When you have worked hard for a long time and tried so many things and wondered why nothing seems to be gathering your people, a result like that can feel incredible.

It is a special moment, an energetic sigh of gratitude mixed with a knot of confusion, as if part of you is scratching your head and wondering what in the world happened. You know there was divine timing involved, and you also know you worked hard and put in effort, and somehow it felt delightful and grounded in your essence.

This brings forth a very particular knot.

You know you would love to replicate the magic and reuse what you made or iterate on it. But first you have to understand what about it worked.

If you love a cozy paranormal mystery novel or a hilarious mystery novel like I do, I invite you to think of yourself as the protagonist. Your job is to get curious and go looking for every little clue, sign, symbol, and pattern. Like any protagonist, it is so much more fun when you have at least one other person, if not a group of people, on the hunt with you.

Begin your business debrief before the thing you think worked

Gosh, that title is a mouthful! I am going to share how to debrief with yourself or your coach. This is the investigation sesh that you'll do with your magnifying glass and Nancy Drew it up!

Okay, so I would begin before the presentation, before the free offering, before the first new person joined your list.

Where did the opportunity come from?

  • Did someone tell you about it, or did you find it inside a community you already belong to, or did the invitation arrive out of a relationship you have been quietly tending?

Then get curious about why you said yes.

  • What did you notice about the host, the other guests, or the people who would be in the room?

  • What did your intuition know about the alignment before you had one piece of tangible evidence? The place where an opportunity begins is part of the result. If that gathering held people who were already aligned with the women you are here to serve, that is not a small clue.

Look at the entire creation

Next I would go through every piece you made, from beginning to end.

What caused you to create the class or the experience you shared?

What did you already understand about the people in that room and the resistance they were carrying?

In this particular case, the Luminary began by teaching what she understands about the resistance her people meet, and that was the intellectual half of her work. Then she used her intuitive abilities to shift the energy so the people listening could experience the work rather than only hear about it, and the offering that followed gave them somewhere to put it, exploration and discovery and awareness and one tangible action.

So look at all of it, the class, the emails that followed, the landing page, the free offering itself, and any emails that went out with it.

Include how you felt

Your debrief is not complete if you only study the tangible pieces.

How did you feel when you said yes?

I would look at your mindset and your energy while you were creating the thing, and how you felt the first time you shared it with your community, and what was moving in you all the way through the promotional period.

This Luminary told me she had never felt so aligned in her business. She knew what she was sharing and she was finally figuring out how to communicate it, and she did not feel like she was performing.

As a space holder, your ability to listen and to feel the room and to bring forth what is in the collective field in a digestible way is part of how you connect with people, and you are already doing it.

Follow the response

Then I would look at where people responded.

Did they reach out after they watched your presentation, after the live event, when an email landed, or once they had opened the free offering?

Learning what made them engage gives you another set of clues, and their response may show you which part of the experience helped them recognize themselves.

Then look at the tangible evidence, how many people joined your list, how many engaged with what you made, how many wrote to tell you what supported them. When people reach out, it worked. When people join your list because they would love to stay connected, it worked.

Decide what gets to live again

Once you have gathered the clues, you get to consider what lives again.

Could the free offering keep welcoming people into your world?

Could the class become part of another summit or bundle later this year?

Which pieces of the sequence could become a process you return to every time you step into another collaborative space?

This is one way through the knot, and I would love for you to take the time with all of it, what happened externally, what was moving in you emotionally, the pieces you made, the systems that held them, and how you showed up. Then you get to decide what becomes a cornerstone, what you reuse, and what you are curious to iterate.

Inside LUSH Business Academy this is part of how we build a business from the foundation of who you are and how you hold space, and we look closely at what your people respond to and what deserves more tending before you go reinvent the wheel.

If the result felt almost too easy, when coaching feels easy is the knot beside this one. If the investigation points back to the offer itself, how to refine your coaching offer gives you five questions for tending what is already there.

And if you would love to understand the medicine you bring to the work, the Magic and Medicine Quiz takes one minute and gives you a doorway into the archetype you are already carrying.

to Social Justice + Equity

Honoring diversity through creating inclusive spaces

As a student of social justice, I am actively listening and learning, trying my best to bring about systemic change. I may falter at times but hope that I humbly continue to dismantle cultural appropriation, racism, gender binaries, and other social issues within my business and as part of my personal growth. I shall continue doing the work.

Land Acknowledgment

To those who came before me

I honor the Elders past, present, and emerging

I, Sora Schilling, acknowledge that I live and work on the ancestral homelands of the Tuscarora, Lumbee, and Catawba. I respectfully also honor the Lenape, Canarsie, and Wappinger people as the original stewards of the land I was blessed to be born on and resided in for most of my life. Lastly, may I take this time to give great thanks to my Korean ancestors.

The lands in and around present day Raleigh are the homelands and gathering places of the Coharie, Eastern Band of Cherokee, Haliwa-Saponi, Lumbee, Meherrin, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Sappony, and Waccamaw Siouan.
